Bulk vs bag

1 cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3" depth. Bags are typically 40lb (0.5 cu ft). Use our calculator to compare cost.

2026 update: Average US topsoil cost: $30–$50 per cubic yard bulk, $4–$8 per bag.

How to calculate how much topsoil you need – step by step

Whether you're fixing a patchy lawn, building raised beds, or landscaping a new garden, knowing the exact amount of topsoil saves money and prevents waste. Our topsoil calculator uses the industry standard formula: (length × width × depth) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Below we break down everything for 2026 projects.

1. Measure your space (US customary units)

Use a tape measure to get length and width in feet. For circular areas, measure the diameter (width across the center). Depth is usually in inches – remember that 3 inches is a common topdressing, while gardens need 6+ inches.

2. Apply the topsoil formula

(L ft × W ft × D inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Add 5–10% for compaction and waste. Our calculator does this instantly.

3. Convert to tons or bags (for ordering)

Screened topsoil weighs about 1.1–1.4 tons per cubic yard depending on moisture. We use 1.35 tons/yard for estimates. Bagged topsoil: a 40lb bag covers ~0.5 cubic feet, so 54 bags = 1 cubic yard.

Pro tip for 2026: account for settling

Fresh topsoil settles over time. If you're filling a large area, order 5–10% extra. For lawns, lightly water after spreading to help compaction.

Frequently asked questions about topsoil calculators

Measure length × width (feet) × desired depth (inches). Divide by 324 to get cubic yards for 1" depth, or use our calculator above. For a new lawn, aim for 4-6 inches.

For 3" depth: (1000 × 0.25) ÷ 27 = 9.26 cubic yards. For 4": (1000 × 0.33) ÷ 27 = 12.3 yards. Use our tool for exact figures.

Topsoil contains organic matter and nutrients, ideal for growing. Fill dirt is subsoil with less organics, used for grading or foundation backfill.

Absolutely. Just measure interior length, width, and desired soil depth. Our calculator includes a waste factor – recommended for beds to account for settling.

One cubic yard covers 108 sq ft at 3" depth, 81 sq ft at 4", and 54 sq ft at 6". Use the coverage table above for other depths.

A 40lb bag typically contains about 0.5 cubic feet. Since 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, you'll need 54 bags (27 / 0.5).
